According to sources, chickweed can grow back from the roots that left behind. I’m not a lawn expert but if this was my yard, depending on the size of the yard & if the infestation is too severe for hand pulling for one person. I would either hire some youths who like to earn quick money for this chore or the other option would be mowing to preventing chickweed from blooming, setting seeds for next year. And hopefully this would slowing them down until the grass is coming out of their dormancy so herbicide can be apply then. Maybe you could try to get in touch the folks from the web site below about their products to use on dormant grass. I have not use this product and don’t have any experience to share. Perhaps they can help you further in combating this pesky weed. Best luck to you Karla! https://www2.nufarm.com/usturf/product/cool-power/

So looks like chickweed it is! In how to combat it it says to use weed killer on lawns that are NOT dormant. What do I do if the grass is dormant still? Is the only option pulling by hand? And if the whole root doesn’t come up will it come up again? Last fall i used preen and after applying to the entire lawn i read ‘not for lawn use ‘ then I had to hurry and apply activated charcoal. What a nightmare!

‘Some ideas’ on the Internet look similar to yours (?). Check out this image of a species of chickweed (Stellaria) and see if you have a match. If this is chickweed, the second link with tips from the Guru, scrolling down to the chickweed section. If it isn’t a match, make new post with flowers photo. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/Portals/0/Gardening/Gardening%20Help/images/Pests/Winter_Weeds236.jpg

Can you show us its flowers? It will help to narrow down which genus this is. I have some ideas but want to be certain about its genus & species for you. Best wishes!
