The pink “petals” which have opened to display the orange seeds are firm and hard to the touch.

Correction: “Hearts A’Bursting” Euonymous americanus seems to have similar, but somewhat narrower leaves. I assume that the pink leaves are from autumn color change. E. americanus has green leaves. I don’t know what color they take on in the fall.

The seed pods look very much like those of euonymous americanus (“strawberry bush”, “bursting hearts”), so you might look for related species to that.
