Notes:

This stalky plant (weed?) that has purpley tops and little flower-like structures on the tops of each stalk, is taking over our back yard. If left alone, it would grow about 12″ tall before dying back. It is driving me crazy, but I don’t want to use Round-Up to get rid of it if I can avoid it! What is it? Is it edible? What can I use to kill it? Thanks! Elizabeth

After looking closely at leaves, it’s purple dead nettle. Henbit has a more roundish leaf. The purple dead nettle has the spiky leaf.

This is henbit and yes it is supposedly edible. I think it’s pretty and leave it in my yard. It’s so common, I’d say roundup is probably the only way to get rid of it. I used some weed+feed stuff one year and it was significantly reduced, but you’ve got to stay on it.

purple dead nettle. Pulls easily, there’s not much root system… Said to be edible, but seems too yucky for me. http://eatingmymoccasinsnow.blogspot.com/2009/02/dead-nettle-lamium-purpureum.html
