Notes:

This pretty, open, airy shrub is growing in shade on an ivy-covered bank in my back yard. It’s deciduous, about 6 ft tall and 6 ft wide. It has occasional spikes as long as two inches on the older parts of the branches. It hasn’t flowered that I’ve seen over the past 10 years, or else the flowers are very inconspicuous.

Can you give us closeup of leaves & branches? this might be a hawthorn (Crataegus) For now check out some images of a species in the hawthorn genus, the parsley hawthorn (Crataegus marshallii). Thankyou & best wishes! https://www.carolinanature.com/trees/crma.html
