Notes:
My husband and I planted a serviceberry in our yard as part of our wedding ceremony. It’s been fine for 2.5 yrs, but this year the fruit is malformed and some have tell-tale rust horns. I found material online about these cedar rusts on plants like apples, and while these mention serviceberry/saskatoon/shadbush as a host, I’ve seen no specific treatment advice for this plant. The general recommendations seem to vary widely. I’m hoping someone with more knowledge on this can help us. Thanks!

I would like advice on how to forage serviceberries that are partially infected with cedar-quince rust. Most of the fruits on serviceberry trees in my area (Maryland suburb of Washington, DC) are infected to some extent, but many fruits look fine. Is it safe to eat the ones that don’t show signs of fungal infection?
