Notes:
Three part question. I planted centipede grass 2 wks ago. I killed everything first. I tilled it and put down the starter fertilizer as recommended. It looks like I have two types of grass growing. I have tall grass shoots and new tiny grass sprouts. Are both of these centipede? My second question is what are the brown spots on the taller grass shoots and how do I get rid of them? Third question is when should I rake up the straw. I always rip out new grass when raking up the straw.

Bobby Master Identifier says:
Anytime you rake the straw mulch out you will be injuring the young grass seedlings, regardless of the variety.

Walter said to go ahead and rake it up so I did today. Why should I have not raked it up? It has been 2 weeks and a lot of the seed is starting to grow.

Perhaps Walter answered this on the radio but, don’t rake up the straw!

Walter Reeves The Georgia Gardener says:
Ha – I forgot to ask on radio if you’d scattered straw. The tall grass is just wheat seedlings and the brown spots are their response to hot weather. They will die soon. The little grass close to the ground is centipede.
