Somebody sure did a number on those with their pruners…. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to prune. Hard to say, but the bark, and growing conditions suggest possibly oak leaf hydrangea. Mine are leafing out, so maybe something else… Like a viburnum or something. I’d wait till they leafed out… And you got a positive Identification before pruning… Ideally, find a decent book on pruning to see if there’s a way to give them back their natural shape…
