Notes:
This Japanese Maple was planted several years ago and it seems to be just hanging on. In the past couple of summers, entire branches would die. Now there are sections of bark missing from the trunk, and a moldy-looking spot on one of the branches that is oozing an amber sap. Is it worth trying to save, or should I try something else?

Southern Garden Coach Master Identifier says:
I suspect that the deep shade and competition of mature trees is holding it back. While I have not observed sap dripping from branches on other maples, I think the bare twigs look as if they have teeth marks from a squirrel or chipmunk. Bottom line: This tree is underperforming and should be replaced with something more suited to the location.
