My 7 year old Lacy Leaf maple has sprouted a large green branch and the leaves (green) of this branch are of a different maple. One side of the tree is a lacy leaf and it looks as though a different maple tree is growing directly out of the trunk of the tree. Do I have two trees in one or will it revert back to a Lacy Leaf. The green branch is eminating out of the tree about mid way up the trunk.

Isn’t it possible that this is a grafted maple and the green branch has emerged from below the graft? Treatment is the same: cut it off

You’re gonna want to cut the green branch off. What happened, is that the maple is trying to revert to a more vigorous form… This happens with many variegated plants. These variegated types often started out as a limb that was different from the rest of the tree…. After being removed and encouraged to root, the nurseryman had a new plant to offer the public… When we don’t get around to removing the green limbs (or forget), we often lose our variegated specimen plants.. They become vigorous green plants…
