Notes:
My husband was clearing some brush on our property and uncovered this collection of bulbs or tubers. A friend suggested maybe it is smilax. If so what is the best way to destroy it. This property is rife with all types of vines and briers and we are trying to make some paths through it.

I don’t know what they are, and I’m wondering if these are the Helianthus tuberosus (Jerusalem artichoke)? Best wishes! https://www.google.com/search?q=Helianthus+tuberosus&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiTj4ix-KjSAhUERiYKHV1iCeUQiR4IgQE&biw=1879&bih=909#imgrc=9RICJ6FOKZl-4M:
