Notes:

I have never seen such a big spider in Canada. Found it around my tomato plants and sunflowers. It was about 3 inches diameter I estimate. Looks quite scary with the yellow markings. Any thoughts what it could be? Is it unusual or quite common?

It is a garden spider. They are quite common in the South. They will not bother you and are fun to watch. My children enjoyed catching grasshoppers and throwing them in the spider’s web and watching her very quickly sting the grasshopper and wrap it up for a later meal for her and her babies. Buck

It looks like a Black and Yellow Argiope, or black and yellow garden spider. I believe it is fairly common, as I think I have seen them in my garden.
