Notes:
I found several of these “fruits” on the ground while camping at Vogel State Park last week. There were several types of trees in the area, but none that I knew to have this kind of fruit. At first I thought it was a nut, but when I cut it open, it had a firm red flesh and red juice. It is about the size of a cherry tomato. The park rangers didn’t know what it was. Do you?

parityanimal Master Identifier says:
Might be some kind of tree gall rather than a fruit.
