This was on my artichoke plant. I thought it was a leaf-footed bug but now wonder if it’s an assassin bug?

You might still be right about ‘a leaf-footed bug’. According to sources the lower leg portion can be varied depending on species. Copy & paste the included link below for a similar looking species (white dot in the center of the back, hefty size legs with spines, etc…), the Acanthocephala femorata). If this is of the species, I can’t tell for certain if this is male or female. Best wishes!
