Notes:
This is a volunteer. About 5 feet tall, very thick stalk, but not vining. It is upright without staking. Its leaves remind me of cucumbers, which I grew last year. But the pod is unlike anything I’ve seen. I have a lot of squirrels and birds around the little garden. This year I am growing tomatoes and hot peppers. What is it??!!

Ah, roypaul, I believe you’re correct. Velvetleaf it is. Boo. I thought I might have a tantalizing new vegetable. A weed. What a disappointment. But thank you!

Looks like Velvetleaf. FAST growing weed and invasive. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/WEEDS/velvetleaf.html

Cucumbers will cross with other cucumbers and produce hybrids, but they are still usually cucumbers. That pod just looks bizarre. I’d agree with you though that the leaves and flowers sure do look like cucumbers…Does the pod get bigger and look like anything when it does?
