Zoysiagrass- Overseeding With Rye
Q: I’m getting older and would like to have a green yard in the winter for once in my life. We have had zoysiagrass forever. What will happen if I sprinkle ryegrass seed over the zoysia now? And how much will it bother the zoysiagrass next June when it finally turns green?
A: Rye really competes strongly with zoysiagrass if you get it to germinate — which is hard because the zoysia is too thick to let the rye seed get close to the ground. Try it if you like… but I don’t recommend it.
