Zoysia – Planting
Q: I’ve got a back yard that is two-thirds zoysia and one-third weeds. I would like to plug pieces of the existing zoysia into the non-zoysia areas. When is the best time of year to do this?
A: Mid-May through mid-June is best. There will still be a chance of rain to help the plugs along and the weather isn’t as hot as it will be in July. First, spray glyphosate (Roundup, etc) on the weeds to kill them. Then use a long-handled bulb planter to remove plugs of dirt six inches apart in the weedy areas. Buy some zoysiagrass sod and cut matching plugs of zoysiagrass from it. Plant the plugs, water every couple of days for two weeks and they will start growing to fill in the empty spots.
