St. Augustine- Planting/ Purchasing

Q: A landscape designer has suggested we use St. Augustine grass in our yard. His work will not be finished until late November. Is it too late to plant in late November? Where could I purchase St. Augustine grass seed?

A: I’m having good success with my own St. Augustine grass lawn. You’ll have to wait until spring to plant either sod or sprigs, since desirable St. Augustine grass does not produce fertile seed. If you want to use this turfgrass, plant ryegrass in November to hold your landscape soil in place. You can kill the ryegrass in late April and plant St. Augustine grass when the soil warms up.
