Centipede Lawn – Seed Development
Q: Is there any benefit to allow seed heads to develop on a centipede lawn. Will the lawn reseed itself?
A: Practically speaking, there is not much benefit. Centipedegrass has low seed yield compared to other turfgrasses. Individual seeds are enclosed in a wax coating which inhibits germination. Although seedheads are produced from summer to fall, centipedegrass requires high air temperatures for germination, followed by regular rain. You’re better off to buy seed and plant in late May next year.
