Tree Value – Formula to Calculate
Q: About a month ago on your radio show you discussed a formula to use to determine the dollar value of a tree. Can you tell me more about that formula?
A: Members of the International Society of Arboriculture use a copyrighted formula to determine the value of landscape trees. The formula takes into account the size, species value, health and location of a tree. Although a homeowner could roughly determine the value of a tree, arborists have the specialized training to identify trees correctly and to determine their health. If you intend to use the value for an insurance or IRS claim, an arborist’s documentation would hold more weight than that of an amateur. Texas A & M University has a formula similar to the ISA formula at their Evaluation of Texas Shade Trees page. The Georgia Forestry Commission maintains a list of arborists here. (broken link)
