Purslane – Identification in Deer Plot
Q: Will you please help and identify the plant in the attached photos? It has started growing in our deer/food plots near Monticello and the deer are favoring it out above our usual winter grazing plants buck oats and crimson clover. Will this plant grow thru the winter of will the first frost/freeze kill it? Do you know where we can buy seeds?
A: It’s common purslane – a weedy annual plant in the landscape, but delicious to wildlife.
Seeds are sold online from several vendors. You can plant purslane in spring and deer will eat it as long as they can find it – then it will die in winter.
Adams-Briscoe Seed in Jackson GA has several wildlife seeds mixtures.
