Pecan – Planting Nut

Q: I told my grandson we were going to grow a pecan tree, so I cracked a pecan and put it in some potting soil. Will the pecan sprout so I can transplant it and grow a tree?

A: UGA pecan expert Lenny Wells says he doubts the kernel will sprout.

In order for a pecan to germinate properly, the whole nut should be planted, with the kernel in an intact shell. In addition, germination increases if the nuts are soaked in water for 2-3 days prior to planting.

The success rate also increases when nuts are placed in damp peat moss at 35 degrees F. for 8 weeks before planting.
