Oleander – Growing
Oleander is beautiful along the Georgia coast and in Florida in the summer. The red, pink and yellow flowers cover the plants most of the season. Although oleander can tolerate a little frost it is not considered hardy in Atlanta. You can grow it outside in a large pot during the summer and bring it inside in winter. Some people are successful simply putting it in the basement for the winter, with little or no watering. In April, put the plant in a shady place and prune, water and lightly fertilize it. Move it to more sunny conditions, plunging the pot into the ground in May.
A few oleanders are reputed to be marginally winter-hardy here. Plant Delights Nursery offers a few.
