Ground Cedar – Lycopodium
Q: Can you tell me the name of this plant? It is growing in our woods and is spreading.
A: The common name of this plant is ground cedar or running cedar but the scientific name is more interesting: Lycopodium digitatum, which means “wolf’s foot”.
This evergreen groundcover is a conversation piece in the landscape. It won’t grow in many places and it is very hard to transplant.
Leave it alone and watch for the spore spikes that emerge in summer.
