Cutting Grass – Wet
Q: I cut my lawn with a push mower equipped with a bagger. My wife insists that I should not cut the grass when it is wet after a rain. Is this correct or will the moisture add viability to my mulch pile?
A:
I see no problems with bagging wet grass and composting it, but if you compost thick layers of grass it will begin to stink something awful. My concern is that the ground is wet when you mow. If you repeat the same mowing pattern over and over, the wheels will compact the soil and make it easier for weeds to grow there. It’s best to alternate patterns of “straight ahead”, “at right angles” and “diagonally” with successive mowings.
