Almanac – Planting by the Signs
Q: My grandmother wants to garden again and she’s looking for a copy of a garden almanac so she’ll know when the signs are right to plant. She particularly wants the one that has the picture of a man with the signs of the zodiac around his body. I haven’t been able to find a copy. Can you help me?
A: The are several competitors in the garden almanac genre. The nationally distributed Farmer’s Almanac (888-222-4276) advertises that it has been around for 182 years. But I think you are looking for the locally produced Grier’s Almanac (770-395-6381) which features an anatomically correct gentleman displaying the zodiac signs and their supposed relation to proper planting.
Some gardeners swear by planting root crops, leaf crops and flower crops according to the relation of the moon, the sun and the planets. Others would rather plant by the day of the week.
I fall into the latter camp, preferring Saturday and Sunday and sometimes Friday afternoon. If your grandmother finds success in planting by the signs, more power to her!
