Snake – On Hummingbird Feeder

Q: I was surprised to find this unwelcome visitor on my hummingbird feeder. At least one hummer was, too, when it came face to face with the snake! What kind of snake is it? Was it after the birds?

I shooed the snake off with a broom – gently – minus a hummingbird breakfast.

A: I asked my snake expert Jim Rodgers and he says it’s a gray rat snake……not venomous…… but well able to hit and injure a hummingbird.
