Mosquitos- Ultrasonic Watch
Q: I recently saw an advertisement for an ultrasonic watch which claims to ward off pregnant female mosquitos because they are the only ones that bite. True or false?
A: It’s true that only female mosquitoes bite but false that the watch repels them. Mosquitoes hear sound in a narrow range: 200 – 400 Hertz. Ultrasound is above 2 million Hertz. Pregnant females of any species are mighty touchy, but even a device “designed with advanced harmonics circuitry to emulate and emit the ultrasonic high frequency of an approaching male mosquito” isn’t likely to bother a female mosquito, pregnant or otherwise. However, if you use the watch to smack the mosquito while she feeds, it would be 100 percent effective.
