Deer don’t like loropetalum? Think again!

Q: I thought that loropetalum was resistant to deer feeding. In March, Bambi and family feasted on the leaves of ours from “deer neck height” down.

A: Thus proving the saying that deer will eat anything if they’re hungry enough. Loropetalum is a member of the witch hazel family. This group of plants is considered resistant to deer feeding because of bitterness and leaf texture. Your deer either have not read the reference books or were very hungry. That would be understandable since in March, all the winter browse has been eaten and green leaves have yet to emerge. I have a list of the plants that are mostly resistant to deer as well as the plants deer like at bit.ly/GAdeerplant.
