Carpenter ants leave frass (sawdust) behind

Q: I found a pile of sawdust looking stuff under my tree. Are there some kind of bugs in the tree?
A: It looks like carpenter ant frass. These big ants don’t eat fresh wood, like termites, but they tear out pieces of water-damaged wood to make their home. They drop this material (frass) out of their front door and it accumulates beneath.
