How to Make a Garden Tuteur (Trellis)

One of my delights is finding new ways to use common materials to benefit my plants. My friend Tara Dillard taught me the word “tuteur”….a garden tower used to train vines.

I decided to make one from copper pipe. It was easy to accomplish and made a nice addition to my garden.

COPPER TUTEUR

4 pieces of one-half inch copper pipe five feet long
4 – pieces of 1×2 pressure treated wood 13 inches long
4 – pieces of 1×2 pressure treated wood 10 1/2 inches long
4 – pieces of 1×2 pressure treated wood 7 inches long
1 – pressure treated 4×4 fence post cap

Drill four 5/16″ holes partway through the underside of the post cap to hold the 4 pieces of copper pipe

Drill a 5/8″ hole at both ends of each piece of 1×2 wood, about 1/2″ from the end

Slip the pieces of wood down the copper pipe (small first, long ones last) to whatever spot seems pleasing to you.

Turn the whole thing upright and plant the vine of your choice at the base.
