Onions – Transplanting
Q: A local store is selling onions for transplanting into the garden. It’s too early isn’t it?
A: I drive past green-spotted bermudagrass lawns every day that prove that onions are perfectly happy in cold weather. Indeed, you can plant garden onions in January, but only as long as you buy the right variety. Good bulbing onions for Georgia include ‘Walla Walla’, ‘Yellow Globe Danvers’, ‘Grano’, ‘Granex’ and ‘Juno’. Onion “sets” are small bulbs grown last year. Plant them 2″ – 12″ apart, depending on the size of the bulb. Fertilize then a couple of times and you’ll have plenty of onions to harvest in June.
