Corn – Buggywhipping
Q: I’m hoping you can help solve a mystery in my garden. It almost looks like someone tried to tie an overhand knot with the leaves.
A: It’s called buggy-whipping. It can be caused by herbicides but my bet is that your situation is caused by cool weather followed by warm weather.
The good news is that it doesn’t hurt the corn much. Most of the time the leaves will unfurl normally, or you can help the process along by running your thumb up the wrapped leaves so they are exposed to sunlight.
