Muscari – Sprouting Leaves Early
Q: When your newsletter calendar came out saying it was time to plant bulbs, I planted Muscari, that was around November 5th. But now it is November 15th and they are shooting up, already 1-inch high through the mulch with leaves starting to spread. I planted them 3 inches deep as the package said. I did not refrigerate them, thinking it was cold enough (nights were in the 30’s the week I planted). Should I cover the exposed petals with more top soil or mulch? Should I dig them out to retard the growth, and plant again later? Have I lost them now for the Spring season? Will they die?
A: Muscari leaves are perfectly cold hardy in Atlanta. Leave them alone and you’ll have lots of blooms in March
