Pine Beetle – Identifying Damage
Q: One of our pine trees has holes along the trunk with bits of rosin sticking out. Our neighbor says we have pine beetles and the tree is dead. What do you think?
A: If there are lots of holes, the tree may be dead but not know it yet! The presence of numerous holes, plus the rosin evidence, indicates serious damage to the tree. You’ll know the answer by July. If the pine suddenly turns brown, have it cut down. Use a pair of binoculars to closely examine the trunks of adjacent trees. If you find more damage, water these trees especially well during the summer. Pines can fight pine beetles better when they are not stressed by drought.
