Composting – Fruit Flies

Q: I am a recent convert to composting. I began my compost pile during the summer and the material is now looking good for fall planting. My challenge is my covered kitchen waste receptacle. I put in fruit and vegetable trimmings, coffee grounds with filters, tea bags, egg shells and even dryer lint. But as the five liter container fills, I develop fruit flies. I don’t want to put insecticide in the container. What can I do to eliminate this nuisance?

A: Your enthusiasm is commendable but your composting receptacle is too big for your waste production. You either need to cook and eat more (or invite more friends to your meals) or get a smaller container. I recommend the later. Plan to empty the container once per week and fruit flies won’t be a problem.
