I planted it, thinking it was a crepe myrtle. Now, I don’t think so. So the question: Is this a crepe myrtle?

To my eyes these leaves & twigs are crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia ), some varieties of this species have “sub-opposite, thick and leathery, privet-like”. Perhaps your specimen might be a type of privet, possible glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum)? But without its flowers, I could only speculating.
