Notes:
I have never seen a flower or seed on this plant. It returns every year. Same size, same shape. Partial sunlight under hardwoods. Plantnet identifies it as beggar lice, but I have never seen any on it.

laura735 Master Identifier says:
Without its flowers to help with the ID, it’s hard to tell. Although the leaves appear to look similar to beggar lice aka tick-trefoil (Desmodium), I can’t be certain. According to sources, species has fuzzy under leaf, stipule , etc. The details of the above specimen is too blurry to tell. Please resubmit with closeups of the main trunk, under leaf, and side view of the plant. Also please tell us what the main stem / trunk is woody or herbaceous type.
For now check out species in the genus to compare with yours. Click on images to enlarge. Thank you & best wishes!
