Thank you for responding! The flowers , & leaves are matched for Florida Anise. Since this “It appeared in our flowerbed”, I assumed your volunteer is a species and not of a cultivar of hybrids (?). According to the included source below, it can tolerate “harsher condition” once it is established. Also morning full sun is not the same as scorching afternoon sun.
This specimen appears thriving and now blooming, regardless its preference for wet, moist soil & shady locale.
In my humble experiences in gardening, plants will grow and thrive where ever they please if they like the locations and light condition. Congrats & best wishes on this beautiful plant D. Henry!

I think it looks similar to Florida Anise too, but it’s not in a very moist location, and gets a lot of sun (6-7 hours without shade) – those things don’t really seem to fit do they?
