Notes:
I keep finding new unknowns in my ‘newish’ yard. This one is intimately entwined with a nice fern, and I first thought it was another fern because the new leaves look similar to a maidenhair fern.

You’re welcome! Appreciate for the confirmed ID of Lygodium japonicum and best of luck in saving the “nice” fern Ernie!

Thank you Laura!
After viewing your links I’m sure you’ve correctly identified it. It certainly has a rank growth habit, and the mature and immature fronds look exactly like the photos. I’ll have to go after the roots and see if I can save the nice fern it’s trying to strangle.

Maybe a species in the Lygodium? Perhaps the Japanese climbing fern (L. japonica)? Look for its sori/sorus to help narrow down. If you are not certain, please resubmit with photo of its sorus. Again I’m only speculating for now. Copy & paste these included links and see if you have a match. Best wishes!
