Pruning oversize holly
Q: One of our parishioners volunteered to “trim” our shrubs and 12 foot tall holly. What do we do now? Should we cut it back even more or just leave it alone and see if it comes back next year? It sits right out by the front entrance.
A: It will surely come back, much faster than you expect. In fact, I think it should’ve been pruned even more.
This looks like a Burford holly. If I’m right, it will always be a big nuisance there by the sidewalk, since it will always want to grow 15’ high and 10’ wide.
If I had my way, I would pull it out. Failing that I would cut it back to 4′ or 5′ and plan to repeat the pruning process every four years.
