It may not die immediately, however it’s got a good bit of dead wood at this point. If it were mine, I would take it out and replant a new tree.

Not having the tree in person, it’s difficult to tell more. Looks like the tree tries to seal off further damage in one wound with the callus. If this was mine, I would wait to see if the other start to have callus also. Check out Walter’s site on ‘tree healing a wound’. Best you might want to consult a Certified Arborist who could diagnostic the cause & whether you can save this tree or not. Best wishes to you & your tree!
