Notes:
Losing a beautiful, mature white oak to some mysterious infestation. Has progressed now to about 1/3 up the tree. Tree’s base is swollen, lumpy – bark has detached in waves all over the tree creating pits, cavities and holes that reach all the way to the actual wood layer beneath. Beneath bark are tiny adult millipede-type insects, snails, ants, etc. and spots of silk webbing, similar to spider’s silk. HELP!! Do not want it to spread to other trees – do I need to remove tree?

Thank you so much for the reply. Shall sleep well knowing this won’t spread!

Walter Reeves The Georgia Gardener says:
None of the creatures you mentiowned attack live in trees, so they are not to blame. White oak trees are very sensitive to rooT damage, to drought, and to soggy soil
