Notes:
I was given this plant, which I like very much, about 6 weeks ago. It had little 1 cm roots after having been cut & rooted in water. Already a couple of its lower leaves were turning quite yellow. I put it in a pot of earth inside of 48 hours. (I removed the yellowest leaves before photographing it.) It was kind of thick earth with no perlite & didn’t have great drainage. The gifter called it a philodendron but I’m not so sure.

From the given photo, to my eyes yours look like a cultivar of Dieffenbachia as Walter said. The leaves vary depending on the different species & numerous hybrids. Sorry, if this is Dieffenbachia, I can’t tell for certain which one is yours. Not having the plant in person, it’s hard to tell why the leaves had turned yellow. Best you could try the experts for the cause & the plant’s exact ID on the included link. Click on the cultivars images to enlarge. Thank you for your quick reply; no offense, but I doubt it’s dieffenbachia because the leaves are narrower than all the dieffes I’ve had & the stalks are longer & more obviously cane-like. Also, why would the lower leaves yellow every 2 weeks while the store-labelled dieffenbachia’s leaves are healthy? Any other folks ready to chime in? Thanks. 🙂
