These strange pods are apparently hanging from the branch of a maple tree in Washington state. About 9 in all, hanging in a row. Included photo of the tree leaf, distant and close-up of pods.

Ha, it is match…yes, it was an art installation…they are carved wood and stain…they used to be very bright red but, now, have availed themselves to the environment…
