Notes:
A number of these have popped up in shaded areas of my backyard. The stems appear woody and stiff. The leaves are smooth and round.

I think you are correct. It looks like the previous property owner cleared some more mature specimens but left the stumps and root system behind. I’ll add it to my invasive species ‘enemies list’ along with Japanese honeysuckle and cat brier!
