Notes:
cross section of stem shows it is like a square no significant odor uppermost leaves around terminal bud hairy, whorled leaves below terminal bud opposite decussate leaves at base rosulate/rosette leaves with no petiole midrib and darker purple than rest of upperside of leave It looks like and partially meets descriptions of Ajuga reptans, but this is New York, not Europe.
