Notes:

Pic 2 shows NO radical decrease in size of leaflets as they near the caudex pic 3 shows appreciable spines/thorns on the spine of the frawn It appears as if the lower leaflets turn into spine/thorns near the caudex I purchased it today, so can NOT tell you how it was grown ie: sun, green house etc I was told that it is of Mexican Origin. LOL, hope the experts are having the ‘final answer’ to your mystery Cycas! According to sources C. taitungensis looks similar to C. revoluta, and C. thouarsii looks similar to C. rumphii. To my eyes C. thouarsii looks prettier than C. taitungensis. But again, I’m not a Cycas expert. Thank you for sharing Richard, best wishes! Laura

As soon as it seemed that we had reached an accord on the name of the cycas, the furor broke out once again and finally everyone decided that it wasn’t a c.titungensis, but is actually a c.thouarsii which feels better to me than the titungensis verdict. Richard

Hi Richard, appreciate very much for the feed back and sharing of your identified Cycas taitungensis. It is nice to know its species instead just ‘a type of Cycas’. Also from all your past queries on this forum, we get to know of numerous interesting plants that grow in your region. A big thank to you Richard! Best wishes! Laura On the side note, I agree if you are not an enthusiast of Palm & Cycas of any particular plant, why waste money on the member ship fee. A better use would be getting us other much coveted plants :).

After much discussion in PalmTalk, we have decided on cycas taitungensis as the identity for my new cycad. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Richard

I have finally, after waiting a week, been granted access to Palm Talk and have posted a message there. Your suggestion that my dioon might actually be a cycas explains much that confused me before. I have read about some 30 different cycas and found none that are native to MX, though the allegation that it is a native MX species has to be taken with a grain, if not a barrel, of salt. I am not sufficiently interested in palms and cycads to justify the 20 dollar annual fee to the Palm and Cycad Society. I am leaning towards cycas armstongii. I will continue to investigate Thanks for the valuable lead Richard

Hi Richard, I’m not an expert on Cycadaceae but with those images of leaflets and spines on the ribs, I’m wondering if your plant could be either a species or a hybrid cultivars in the Cycas genus instead of Dioon genus? Link below is for different cultivars of Cycas genus. Check them out. You could try the Palm & Cycad Society to help with its exact ID. Maybe you could share it us. Best wishes!
