Notes:
The root comes out of knuckle like clusters. It is yellow and deep brown black, there are areas of hardened root that is dark brown. It has 3-5 ft testicle roots that grow into the earth. The house is from the 1930s and has been neglected. I removed the grass and added top soil. As my plants started dying I removed the composted top soil, dug deeper and found a mat of these root runners. HELP

Bobby Master Identifier says:
If possible identify the grassy vegetation that remains outside of the area you are renovating. The rhizomes you have pictured are segmented in a way that reminds me of Dallasgrass. That may be a starting point for you. http://www.ptrpest.com/turf/dallis/dallis.html Good luck!
