Notes:
Dallas, Georgia. I have four of these. The last one looks sick but it looks like it is sprouting new growth but will be ok. I was thinking of pulling them all because they have gotten huge. If I knew how to prune them I’d keep them. The branches under the leave are long so they look weird when I’ve cut them before. What are they called???

It was like that before the mulch. Plus I have three others and they are doing fine (the one next to the sick one is in the last picture). I looked at it yesterday and it is sprouting a bunch of new leaves so I think it will recover. My issue with these things is how huge they are getting. I want to keep them to have some evergreen color even though the spikes on the leaves KILL me when I decorate for the holidays. Someone told me if I cut them they will get “leggy” and maybe die. So I thought if I could ID them I could read up on how to properly cut them back.

I suspect the declining shrub is due to the thickness of mulch piled over the root zone.

This is some kind of holly. You can almost cut it to the ground and it will usually come back.
