Notes:
This vine started coming up as a volunteer in my garden. At first I thought it was a watermelon vine, but as the fruit started growing, I noticed they had spikes. Any ideas? I thought maybe it was wild cucumber, but the leaves don’t match. Other ideas from Google are Cucumis africanus, bitter melon, or paddy melon, but they are not from this area.

Way to go Stone, that’s pert’near a triple attaboy and back pat! I’ve seen so many leaf and stem galls this year I was thinking in that vein. Wow that would have been a heap big crow meal for sure!

Yes, that looks just like it! I wonder how it could have gotten here in the Upstate of SC? Earlier in the year I planted some mixed greens in that spot. Maybe a seed made its way into the packet? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cucumis_anguria.JPG

thought it might be related to buffalobur (solanum rostratum)… but no thorns… Searched Citrullus and then Cucumis… I think I tracked it down… Compare with Cucumis anguria; West Indian gherkin some people grow it as food… http://www.worldcrops.org/crops/Maxixe.cfm

I think you’re right about it being a wild cucumber. There are several different varieties on the wild side of that family.
